The Airtel Africa UNICEF learning program is a partnership between Airtel Africa and UNICEF that zero-rates access to digital learning content — the UNICEF Learning Passport and locally curated curriculum resources — so students can reach lessons on their phones without burning their own data bundle. For 200-level and secondary school students in Nigeria, that matters: a Zoom lecture can eat 300 MB in 40 minutes, and the cheapest Airtel daily plan on ABS Vendor — 300MB -2 Days Hot Deal 🔥 at ₦ 150 — would be gone before the second class. The program exists so the lesson itself costs nothing; your own browsing still does.
What the Airtel Africa UNICEF learning program actually covers
The partnership, first announced in 2020 and expanded since, is built around three commitments: zero-rated access to the Learning Passport platform, content in local languages and aligned to national curricula, and teacher training so the material gets used in classrooms rather than sitting on a server. Airtel operates it across its 14 African markets, Nigeria included.
What "zero-rated" means in practice
Zero-rating means the network does not deduct data from your bundle while you are inside the whitelisted platform. It is not free internet. Anything outside that walled garden — a YouTube tutorial, a GitHub clone, a PDF your lecturer dropped in a WhatsApp group — is billed normally. So the program is a genuine saving, but it is a saving on one lane of your data use, not all of it.
What it does not cover
- Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams lectures — billed as normal data
- WhatsApp, Telegram and email attachments
- YouTube, TikTok and Instagram
- Coursera, Udemy and freeCodeCamp (though some of these have their own telco deals — check inside the app)
- Software updates, app downloads and cloud backups
If your week is mostly live classes and downloads, the program trims your bill but does not replace a bundle. That is the honest picture.
How a Nigerian student gets on the program
There is no separate Airtel SIM tier to buy. Access is through the platforms themselves, so the practical steps are:
- Open the UNICEF Learning Passport site or app and register with your email or school details.
- Insert an active Airtel SIM and confirm mobile data is switched on — zero-rated pages still need a data session to load.
- Load the platform and check your balance before and after a 5-minute session. If the balance is unchanged, the zero-rating is live for your line.
- If the balance drops, the whitelist may not have reached your region yet — report it via Airtel customer care on 111 and keep using the platform on Wi-Fi in the meantime.
- Ask your department or school ICT unit whether your institution has been onboarded; school-level onboarding is how most of the curriculum content gets mapped.

The data you still have to buy — and what it should cost
Zero-rating covers lessons. It does not cover the live class, the submission portal or the group chat where the assignment actually gets explained. So budget for a real bundle. From the current ABS Vendor Airtel list:
- 150MB - 1 Day Hot deal 🔥 — ₦ 80. Enough for one short reading session on the Learning Passport plus WhatsApp. Not enough for a Zoom lecture.
- 300MB -2 Days Hot Deal 🔥 — ₦ 150. Fine for text-heavy coursework days when the heavy lifting happens on the zero-rated platform.
- 600MB - 2 Days Hot Deal 🔥 — ₦ 250. The realistic pick for a student with two live classes and a submission in the same 48 hours.
- Binge 500 — ₦ 480 for 1.0 GB, 1 day validity. Pricier per MB but useful when you need a full gig in one day.
- Weekly Plan 500 — ₦ 480 for 500 MB over 7 days. Good if your week is mostly platform reading and light WhatsApp.
- Binge 600 — ₦ 576 for 2.0 GB plus 2GB YouTube Night and 200MB for YouTube/Instagram, 2 days validity. The best value on this list for a heavy two-day stretch — midterms, for instance.
If your usage is closer to 10–20 GB a month rather than 500 MB a week, a single small bundle will frustrate you. Compare the bigger options in our breakdown of the cheap monthly data plan for Airtel Nigeria before you commit to a daily plan habit.
Five settings that stop the bundle leaking
The program saves you money on lessons. These settings stop the rest of your phone from eating what is left.
1. Turn on Data Saver and per-app restrictions
On Android, Settings → Network → Data Saver, then set unrestricted access only for the apps you actually need for class. On iOS, Settings → Cellular and switch off cellular data for every app that does not need it — Instagram and the Play Store are the usual culprits.
2. Force Wi-Fi-only downloads
WhatsApp: Settings → Storage and Data → Media auto-download, set to Wi-Fi only for photos, audio, video and documents. Telegram: Data and Storage → disable auto-download on mobile data entirely. Spotify, Netflix and YouTube all have a "download over Wi-Fi only" toggle; switch it on and leave it on.
3. Use lite builds and the browser data-saver
Facebook Lite, Messenger Lite and Chrome's Lite mode cut page weight substantially. For reading-heavy coursework, a text-first browser saves more than any plan upgrade.
4. Cap the Play Store and App Store
Play Store → Settings → Network preferences → Auto-update apps over Wi-Fi only. On iPhone, Settings → App Store → App Downloads → Always Ask. A single background game update can swallow 800 MB while you are in a lecture.
5. Check your balance before and after every class
Dial *140# before a Zoom session and again after. Two weeks of that tells you your real per-class cost, which is the only number that should decide your plan size. If you ever overshoot and need cash, our guide on how to change airtime into cash in Nigeria explains the process; ABS Vendor pays 85% of face value on Airtel airtime, so 5,000 naira of airtime becomes ₦4,250.
Is the program enough on its own?
No — and treating it as enough is how students end up missing submissions. The realistic model is: lessons and curriculum reading on the zero-rated platform, live classes and downloads on a paid bundle sized to your actual week. A 600MB - 2 Days Hot Deal 🔥 at ₦ 250 covers a normal teaching week for most students; midterm weeks need the Binge 600 at ₦ 576 or a bigger monthly plan. The program is a discount on one lane, not a replacement for the road.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Airtel Africa UNICEF learning program free for Nigerian students?
Yes, in the sense that data used inside the whitelisted learning platforms is zero-rated and not deducted from your bundle. You still need an active Airtel SIM and data switched on, and anything outside those platforms is billed normally.
Do I need a special Airtel SIM or plan to access it?
No special SIM or plan is required. Any active Airtel line works once the platform is whitelisted for your region; the access is controlled on the platform side, not sold as a separate bundle.
Does the program cover Zoom and Google Meet lectures?
No. Live video classes run on third-party apps and are billed as regular data. That is the part you budget for — roughly 300 MB for a 40-minute Zoom lecture at standard quality.
How do I check whether zero-rating is working on my line?
Dial *140# before and after a five-minute session on the Learning Passport. If your balance is unchanged, it is working. If it dropped, the whitelist has not reached your line yet — report it to Airtel on 111.
Which Airtel data plan should a student pair with the program?
For a normal teaching week, the 600MB - 2 Days Hot Deal 🔥 at ₦ 250 covers live classes and submissions. For midterms or project deadlines, the Binge 600 at ₦ 576 gives 2.0 GB plus night YouTube data over two days.
Can the program replace my monthly data bundle?
It cannot. Zero-rating applies only to the learning platforms, so WhatsApp, YouTube, app updates and live classes all still draw from your bundle. Treat the program as a discount on coursework, not as your entire data supply.
The gap most students hit is not the lesson — it is the 48 hours around a deadline when live classes, uploads and group chats all land at once. Sizing a bundle for that week is the whole game. You can create a free account at absvendor.com and buy the 600MB - 2 Days Hot Deal 🔥 or Binge 600 in under a minute, so the next midterm week does not catch you with 40 MB left.
