Definition Of Knowledge ( linguistically)

Knowledge is defined as the facts or ideals gained or acquired through learning or experience, is also defined as as a total understanding of something with a firm and solid understanding.

Definition of knowledge (Islamically)

In Islam knowledge is defined as a understanding of book 📖 of Alloh(subhanau wa tahaalah), sayings of Prophet Muhammad (solla llohu alae wa salam) and sayings of consensus of his companions ( may Alloh be pleased with them). This is what is referred to as knowledge in Islam because Alloh (subhanau wa tahaalah) is the All-knowing, He says " fight o you Muslims for the cause Alloh and know that Alloh is the All-knower and All-hearer " quran 2 Vs 244.
Prophet Muhammad (solla llohu alae wa salam) says "anyone Alloh (subhanau wa tahaalah) wishes good for he will bestowed him knowledge (i.e he will turn him to knowledgeable one) bukhoori 71. So, this is the type of knowledge that is the most superior among the knowledges, because Islam is based on knowledge and none will practice this Islam without having this irreplaceable knowledge.

Grades Of Knowledge

There are four types of knowledges, which are stated as follows :
1. The real knowledge : This is understanding of something with its real and firm actuality. (I.e knowing that Alloh (subhanau wa tahaalah) is the creator of heaven and earth

2. Illusion or Delusion : This is refers to as understanding a false knowledge based on an inappropriate interpretation of reality evidence 🧾 to the contrary. A situation of having 70% wrong to 30% right.

3. Doubtful : This type of knowledge is refers to as knowledge whereby someone is being suspended between two or more contradicting issues without having one accepted. For instance, having 50% assurance and 50% uncertainty.

4. Assumption/Opinion : This is type of knowledge acquired based on assumptions and this is often having correct views atimes. Having 70% to right and 30% to wrong.

Types Of Knowledge:

There are two types of knowledges:
1. Islamic Knowledge: This include having basic understanding of islam from the beginning to the end, perhaps, Islamic knowledge has no end, it is to be learned from cradle to the grave 🪦 according to prophetic sayings and is obligatory upon all Muslims

2. Worldly knowledge: This is the type of knowledge that is widely acquired by different methods based on different ideals. e.g Mechanism, History, Human science, Arts and so on.

Most Important Knowledge

All knowledge is useful, but the most important and irreplaceable knowledge in Islam is Islamic knowledge (ʿIlm ad-Dīn). This is because Allah ﷻ has made it obligatory upon every Muslim to learn it, and it can only be acquired in the correct way — by learning from righteous scholars who teach according to the Qur’an, Sunnah (authentic Hadith), and the consensus of the Companions (ijmāʿ aṣ-ṣaḥābah).

Through this knowledge, what seems difficult becomes easy, both in worldly affairs and in matters of the religion. Even many scientific discoveries are already explained within Islamic knowledge. For example, Allah ﷻ described in the Qur’an the stages of human creation — from a drop of fluid to a complete human being — in a way that no scientist can disprove.

Similarly, the Qur’an mentions the splitting of the moon 🌙, and centuries later, researchers confirmed that the moon once experienced a splitting. This shows that no scientific research can ever disprove the divine truths revealed in the Qur’an, because Islamic knowledge is divine knowledge from Allah ﷻ, not man-made.

The sayings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also provide guidance in areas like medicine and hygiene. For example, he recommended using siwāk (miswāk) to clean the mouth, which modern science now confirms as effective in removing germs and improving oral health. Likewise, he prohibited exhaling into a drinking vessel, a teaching that aligns with hygiene and disease prevention. These examples show that more than 1,400 years ago, without modern technology, the Qur’an and Sunnah provided guidance that science is only now confirming.

Therefore, Islamic knowledge is more beneficial than any other type of knowledge, because it guides us correctly in this world and the Hereafter. Some knowledge taught in schools may even contradict Islamic belief (ʿaqīdah). For example, the concept of the water cycle in biology describes rainfall as a result of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. But as Muslims, we know and believe that it is Allah ﷻ Who sends down the rain, as He says:

> “It is He who sends down water from the sky for you, from which you drink, and by which plants grow for your cattle to graze.” (Qur’an 16:10)

At the same time, Islam encourages us to seek beneficial worldly knowledge and skills that support our practice of the religion and improve our lives. Allah ﷻ says:

> “And do not forget your portion of this world…” (Qur’an 28:77)
