If your token suddenly stopped lasting, you're not imagining it. Across Lagos and other cities, streets are being moved into Band A, the most expensive tariff band, and many say the light hasn't improved. In Akowonjo, Egbeda, residents who say they already had 20+ hours on Band B protested after being moved up.

Here's what Band A means, how to confirm your band, and the exact steps to challenge it.

What the bands mean

NERC groups customers into bands by average daily supply hours, from Band A (most hours) to Band E (fewest):

Band Minimum daily supply
Band A 20 hours
Band B 16 hours
Band C 12 hours
Band D 8 hours
Band E 4 hours

The price gap is big. Several September 2026 tariff schedules list Band A (Non-MD) at ₦209.50 per kWh.

Step 1: Confirm your band

Check your DisCo's website or customer portal using your meter or account number. Your token receipt or monthly bill usually shows your band too.

Quick check: divide the amount you paid by the units you got. NERC says to remove VAT (7.5%) first when working out your rate from a prepaid purchase.

Step 2: Know your right

You can't simply opt out of Band A, because moving customers between bands is the DisCo's decision. But NERC has made it clear that if a DisCo can't supply Band A customers with 20 hours, it must downgrade them.

NERC has acted on this before, ordering DisCos to downgrade 58 streets on 15 feeders over consistently poor supply and to compensate affected customers.

Step 3: Keep a supply log

Before complaining, note when light comes and goes every day for at least one to two weeks. Screenshots of your meter and your neighbours' logs make your case stronger. A log is your evidence that you're not getting 20 hours.

Step 4: Complain in the right order

  1. DisCo first. Submit a written complaint at your DisCo's nearest Customer Care Unit and get an acknowledgement. The DisCo is expected to resolve it within 15 working days.
  2. NERC Forum office. If they don't fix it, escalate to the nearest NERC Consumer Forum office. Find locations at nerc.gov.ng/forum-offices.
  3. NERC headquarters. Still unhappy? Submit your complaint and documents at nerc.freshdesk.com, email [email protected], or call 02013444331 or 09088999244.

Tip: complain as a street, not just as one house. Band decisions are made by feeder, so a joint complaint carries more weight.

Will tariffs go up again?

Not immediately, according to the government. On 21 September 2026, the Minister of Power said a tariff rise is not on its agenda. But your band still decides what you pay, so it's worth getting it right.

Make every naira of your token count

While you sort out your band, buy tokens without queues or stress. On ABS Vendor, you can buy prepaid tokens for IKEDC, EKEDC, AEDC, IBEDC, PHED, KEDCO and more, straight from your wallet, and earn ABS Points on every purchase.
