Checking your result is the easy part. What you do in the weeks after it decides whether the result actually turns into an admission, a job application or a second chance. Most students either panic over one bad grade or relax too soon, and both cost them. Here are the seven things worth doing, in order, whether you wrote WAEC, NECO or both.

Short version: confirm what you actually got, protect your PIN, fix any error early, make sure your result is on your JAMB and school records, and never pay anyone who promises to “upgrade” grades.

1. Count your credits properly

A credit is a grade from A1 to C6. A pass (D7, E8) is not a credit, and F9 is a fail. Most universities and polytechnics ask for at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, in not more than two sittings. Courses like Medicine, Law, Engineering and Nursing also ask for specific subjects, such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Literature, so check the exact list for your course.

Write down your subjects and grades, then tick them against the requirement for the course you want. Do not rely on memory or on a screenshot someone sent you.

2. Check the result yourself, from the official portal

Use only the official result portal and your own details. Be cautious of anyone who offers to “check for you” and asks for your exam number, date of birth and PIN, because those are the details used to take over your records. If you still need to check, these guides walk you through it:

3. Protect your PIN or token, and your exam details

A result checker PIN or token is tied to your result. Do not post a photo of it, send it in a group chat, or hand it to a stranger. Keep your exam number, registration number and the PIN together somewhere safe, because you will need them again for verification, for school admission forms, and when you apply for a certificate or a statement of result.

If you buy a PIN, buy it from a seller you can trust and make sure it arrives unused. Our education pins are delivered straight to your account dashboard, so you do not have to meet anyone or wait in a queue.

4. Look for errors now, not later

Wrong subject, missing subject, wrong name or a grade that looks out of line with your performance: these happen. Report them early, through your school or the examination body’s official complaint channel, with your exam number and any evidence such as your registration slip. Corrections take time, and admissions deadlines do not wait.

If you see “result withheld” or “awaiting result”, the cause is usually a registration problem or a review. Only your school and the examination body can clear it. Another PIN will not.

5. Make sure your result reaches your admission record

For university admission, your O’level result has to be matched to your JAMB profile. Check that the examination type, year and registration number on your JAMB profile are exactly right, and follow your institution’s process for presenting O’level results. Polytechnics, colleges of education and post-UTME screening each have their own steps and deadlines, so read the school’s admission notice instead of relying on word of mouth.

If your JAMB score came out lower than you hoped, you still have options. Scored low in JAMB? Here are your best alternatives covers them.

6. Plan a resit if you are short of credits

If you missed English, Mathematics or another needed subject, the fix is a focused resit and not a new start. Write down the subjects you are missing, register for the next available private or GCE sitting of WAEC or NECO, and start preparing for those subjects first. Most institutions accept results from two sittings, but not all do and some courses limit this, so confirm with the school before you decide to combine them.

Use the gap well: past questions, a small study group and a fixed daily timetable beat last-minute cramming. Even a few weeks of consistent practice on one weak subject can change a grade.

7. Never pay anyone to “upgrade” your result

This is the biggest trap after results come out. Messages promising to change a D7 to a B3 for a fee are scams, or involve forgery that can cancel your result and end your admission. Genuine results cannot be bought. A fraud case is far worse than a resit. We explain how it works in Searching for “WAEC upgrade”? Read this before you pay anyone.

Quick checklist

  1. I know my grades and which are credits (A1–C6).
  2. I have at least five credits, including English and Mathematics, or a resit plan.
  3. My PIN, exam number and registration number are stored safely.
  4. I have reported any error to my school or the examination body.
  5. My JAMB and school records match my O’level details.
  6. I have the admission deadlines for my courses written down.
  7. I have not paid, and will not pay, anyone to change my grades.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use WAEC and NECO results together?

Many institutions accept results from two sittings, and these can sometimes be across WAEC and NECO, but rules differ between schools and courses. Ask the admissions office of the school you are applying to before you rely on a combination.

Is a NECO result as good as a WAEC result?

Both are accepted O’level qualifications for admission. What matters is the credits you hold, the subjects required for your course, and whether the school accepts your number of sittings.

What if I did not get five credits?

You can resit the missing subjects, choose a programme with lower requirements such as a diploma or NCE and move up later, or learn a skill alongside your resit. Each route is slower than a first-time pass, but each is far better than a forged result.
